Ice Dam Prevention for Calgary Homes: A Complete Guide
Ice dams form when heat escaping from your attic melts snow on the upper roof, which then re-freezes at the colder eaves, creating a dam that traps water underneath shingles. Calgary's chinooks make this especially unpredictable — a rapid melt followed by a freeze overnight is the perfect recipe.
The fix is almost always in the attic, not on the roof: improve insulation (R-50+ for Calgary), seal air leaks around pot lights, bath fans, and the attic hatch, and ensure soffit-to-ridge ventilation is unblocked.
If you already have an ice dam forming, do NOT chip it off — you'll damage shingles. Steam removal by a professional is the only safe method.
A roof inspector can identify the warm spots and ventilation gaps causing your ice dams and recommend targeted fixes.
